I’ve been privileged to have had a long career filled with the indescribable feeling of crossing the finish line with a green light but also including tough and painful moments. I’ve achieved things that felt unreal to even dream of as a kid and made it to the legendary World Cup circuit. I raced against my childhood idols, battled with tough racers and made amazing friends along the way. I started top 15 at the finals of my first WC season. I proudly represented Finland at two Olympics and five World Championships. I worked hard to the top 7 group in Giant Slalom and aimed high. Unfortunately, I injured myself badly in 2009 and I have been lucky to be able to race since the accident. I consider my comeback from the accident to be my biggest achievement of all, and the results I’ve achieved after my comeback have been extra special for me.

I’m at the point where I’m glad to say that I am retiring with good health from the life as a professional athlete. I can’t thank everyone enough who have helped and supported me along the way. You know who you are and you made it all possible! I’m excited for the next challenges in life.
The season opener in Sölden was a mixture of positives and a big negative. I felt very confident racing with Nordica and I was extremely excited to start the race season. We hadn't had a chance to really test the equipment on icy conditions during the whole pre-season, but during the first icy gates on the top flat I quickly got the feeling the setup I had chosen was just right. I didn't do anything extraordinary during my run and I was in the fight for a good position until the last flat where I made a dumb mistake which lead to me lying in the safety nets. It was a combination of a lack of 100% concentration at that point, a technical fault and maybe a touch of bad luck. The wait for the next WC in Beaver Creek feels long after such a result.
So finally this Sunday it's time for racing again! Beaver Creek has given me a lot of different results throughout my career. All from a 5th place to a +20 result. I have always liked the profile of the slope and the type of course setting there normally is on the Birds of Prey. Speedy and long, open setting and that smooth US snow. I also feel that I have improved my skiing on flats these last years. So tune in on Sunday, it will for sure be a great race again! There's a lot of guys skiing well at the moment!

Bonjour from Les 2 Alpes! We have had a good start to the new season. In the valley the temperature goes up to over +25 celsius, luckily enough it has been frozen almost every day at the glacier so we manage to get a few quality hours on hard snow before it turns soft.

After every training I'm feeling more confident and excited about my new equipment. There's a lot of work of course at the beginning. Starting off with fitting boots and finding out what kind of setup that works for me since I've never used Nordica boots before. For example; testing lifters, spoilers, footboards, angles etc... Then concentrating on plates and skis to find the best combo for my style. Details can make a huge difference and is of course also a key to skiing faster and more confident down the course. And of course at the same time fine tuning the technique after the summer break. In other words, there's still a lot to do before Sölden and still probably lots even before Beaver Creek. Interesting and motivated days on the slope!

GS has been the main focus as always and will definitely continue to be. Today though, slalom was again on the program after a one year long break again. It didn't feel catastrophically bad even though my technician said I looked a little rusty, I might actually do some more…. or at least train more. Just to keep me sane and not overload on GS. That's also why tomorrow it's time for Super-G.
On Friday we fly back home. We have roughly 6 weeks time to fully concentrate on physical training and enjoy summer before we fly to Ushuaia in the beginning of September. To be on skis at this time is great, but I still need some summertime before I can say I'm mentally ready for another intense season.
My contract with Fischer ended this season which meant I had the possibility to also test other ski brands. Switching to a new brand is a lot of work but also very motivating, especially if you have some years behind you already. I was really convinced with Nordica's skis and boots after a few days of testing with their very motivated team!
The Finnish Combi (?!) team; Samu, Eemeli, Victor and me, leave for Les Deux Alpes in a few weeks. Normally we've always started the season in August, this year we changed it around a bit which allows us to focus even more on the fysical training before a longer camp in Ushuaia beginning in September.
There's still some summer left though to enjoy so let's not think about skiing quite yet.
The Garmisch race is tomorrow! I've raced here two times and in both I skied good results for that time. In the World Champs 2011 I was 10th and two years ago in the World Cup I was 4th. The weather might be bad for the race but it shouldn't be a problem. I have a confident feeling and I enjoy the slope and atmosphere here. The plan is to be focused, determined and give my best! And most of all enjoy it.
The weather has been challenging this week and we missed a day of training, luckily we also got a few better days to build up the skiing touch and body again after the jet lag. It took longer to recover this time than in earlier this season in December.

I've been horrible at updating my blog this season. Sorry for that, I'll try to keep posts coming more often.

The World Champs are done and I placed 14th. It was a tight race with a lot of action and good skiing from most. Congrats to Ted, Marcel and Alexis. Amazing skiing from all of you! Unfortunately mistakes cost a lot in those kind of races where the margins are small. A top 15 spot was not what I was going for, I had my goals much higher. This week, except for my body, has been great. I'm satisfied with my equipment and it feels like I can work on the course more like I want to at the moment. There's still the same issue as always, my race line, that needs adjustment. In the second run with only 1 second off Hirscher I knew that with a really good and risky run I can fight for the medals. I started aggressive, skied too straight and fought more with my line than in the first. In both runs I lost a lot on the end and I'm still not really sure why, I felt like I kept the tempo and I didn't feel tired so I have to analyze how I came over to the last flat. Unclean, too round or something else?

Zoom-Agence

However, there's always the good and the bad. Positive is that I felt good on my skis, had sections with the green light and I feel more confident for the upcoming races. Negative is the result of course and that I feel a bit stuck in my development in these last two seasons. Since my back problems started in the beginning of last season I've taken a step backwards and I need to figure out what's wrong with my body because I don't want another season where I'm not performing at my best. That's the most important thing after this season.
The most important thing last weekend was that I enjoyed racing again. The result was also not SO bad. ;) My first run was technically okay but way too simple, I should have had the same level of determination as in the second run. I think my skiing, my material and my team are on a good way and I'm looking forward to the next race. Thanks for the great support! It always means a lot.
The season start is in 9 days on the steep and usually bumpy slope in Sölden! Today the FIS snow controllers gave the green light for the race. Autumn has been full with training all over Europe. Stelvio, Saas Fee, Zermatt, Pitztal, Hintertux… Finally it's time to get on with what we are training for!

We had some really good training in Saas Fee a few weeks back. A similar icy surface as on race days and a steep difficult slope that required a lot of concentration. The early wake up provided stunning views up on the glacier. Skiing at it's best.

As most of you probably know, last season was tough. I fought a lot with my body and at many times I just couldn't wait for it to be over so I can repair my body and mind. I crashed in the last race in Lenzerheide, and luckily I didn't hurt myself too bad but I already had a surgery waiting for me on Monday right after the last race weekend. Two hernias had been growing bigger since my Pitztal-crash almost 5 years ago, and one of them was in a deeper side-muscle in my stomach which affected the whole muscle balance in my torso and probably also caused my prolapses in the lower discs in my spine.

Four and a half months was a long enough break from skiing for me to get my body in better shape. The first months was a combination of rehab and physical training. Important for me was also to go for a much needed vacation with my girlfriend! In June, July and August I could train much harder with the focus still on strengthening my torso but also on muscle power, stamina and endurance. Muscle power training especially needed some imagination because I couldn't and still aren't aloud to load heavy weights on my back or lift heavy, so big weight squats and snatch's are out of the question.
I mainly focused on one legged exercises and it worked well, I feel that my power levels are as high as before at a high standard. I could take quickness and agility training also in the program about 1,5 months ago and to do them without a slashing pain in my lower back is a relief. I still remember the feeling in the quickness-training the evening before the Alta Badia race. I couldn't even make a proper quick sidestep or actually do any fast movements… That's in the past now, and I've had enough thinking about last season so I'm not going to talk about it anymore.
I'm in Saas Fee on my second camp at the moment. Here we've been blessed with clear sky and a hard surface so the soft conditions in Stelvio are already forgotten! So good that I even could sacrifice a perfect day for slalom training!! ;) First time in two and a half years and I must admit it was fun slapping the gates. I'll take it back on the program this year mostly for variation to my training, but let's see if I start some races also. Tomorrow it's back to GS again!
A 10th place in Kranjska Gora was a happier experience for me. Was great to get some joy even though the runs weren't perfect. The race conditions were normal for once, and it looks to be that way also here in Lenzerheide! It's going to be the last race for me this season, I have a surgery on Monday in Helsinki... So I'm going to have to focus on the next season straight away and I like the thought of training and racing 'pain-free'!
I opened my fishing season earlier than ever before! Just half an hour from Kranjska Gora flows Radovna, a really beautiful river with crystal clear water and good sight fishing for trout. My two Slovenian coaches both flyfish and showed me the place! I was stunned and it was a pretty great day with GS training in the morning and flyfishing in the afternoon. Definitely need to have my flyrod with me from here on!
Hello from the warmest winter games ever (probably)! It's nice to walk to lunch in shorts this time of year. But it does get a bit sweaty on the slope... The Olympic spirit is growing day by day. Skied two days now and the conditions are actually good considering it's atleast +10 degrees at 9 AM. Still have some testing to do before the race, I'm hoping for cold nights.

It's been a few difficult and painful months for me. The races haven't succeeded at all like I've wanted. Considering the circumstances and situation with my back it's actually been pretty ok achievements, but when you've once tasted something better, the 'good' doesn't satisfy you anymore.

December was hectic and at Christmastime I first got the diagnose that I have a disc prolapse in my lower back. Which explained a lot. After further examination we found out that the prolapses aren't so bad, but the pulpus in the lowest disks have leaked out which means that my 'suspension' is gone and the area is stiff. A week ago I got a cortisone injection which helped a bit. In these few days of training before I head to Sochi I'll decide if I need more. It sucks and is really frustrating, but I've been through worse. The fight is for sure not over yet and I still believe in my chances for the last races! It just requires work and a good spirit.

I've been a bit quiet here lately, it's mostly because I've been pissed. But that's unfair to you. :) so sorry for that. The Olympics are coming up and that's an amazing race and experience so I'll try to share that better. Even though it is a bit restricted what all I can post.

Right now I'm focusing on my GS and to get my body working correctly. We're training in Pass Thurn, it's +10 degrees so the weather is putting my coaches to work real hard. Without them it would be difficult to do anything!

All the best!

Happy New Year!! The year changed for me in Radstadt. I didn't go back to Finland for Christmas, I decided to relax, train and take care of my body here instead. After New Year I've been training, testing equipment and preparing for Saturday's race in Adelboden here close by in Reiteralm.

The past races haven't been result wise my best and far from what I'm happy with. The positive side of the story is that I have been fast. Negative though that I've made too many big mistakes.. No other option than to keep on fighting and hope that my body can take it.

Tomorrow I'm driving to Adelboden. Extremely challenging, especially this year I've heard with so little snow. It's definitely one of the best races of the season. Let's go have some fun!
Luckily the fight continues soon, I know my form is good so I'm looking forward to racing in Europe and in Val'd'Isere and Alta Badia! I'm hoping for really icy races. Today I'm flying towards Zurich. Will try to kill the jetlag there one day and then continue to France.

Marcushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05357639129722778336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6716998676516388162.post-88222856121071308552013-12-05T07:42:00.000+02:002013-12-05T07:42:03.968+02:00A few days to raceday! The blizzard came to Beaver Creek! The sights changed from no snow to a lot of snow. The cold came in and last night it snowed about 30 cm. Shouldn't be a problem for the races here though. Really wanted to go ski some powder today, but I had a day off and I need to take advantage of that. My tough serviceman skied about 15km of powder today…
Training in Vail was good as usual. The surface wasn't really alike how it will be on the race hill on Sunday, but I feel like I'm ready to race again! Already got to challenge great skiers in the trainings. Hirscher, Raich, Ligety, Neureuther, Pinturault… I always enjoy training in tough company!

We had the chance to go and watch Minnesota Wild vs. Colorado Avalanche in Denver before a day off. We got the whole show; tight game with Mikko Koivu scoring 2-2 just four seconds(!) before the final buzzer, an exciting overtime and a penalty shootout!
There's no training on the slopes today so that means an extra training at the gym. On Friday I should get on the slopes again!
I'm back in Vail! Here is usually one of the best trainings during the season. Or at least it feels like it after all the glacier skiing! I arrived 5 days ago, still fighting with the jet lag but it's getting better. My race is Sunday next week so I'm for sure going to be in the rhythm by then. Then it's just 6 days to the next race in Val'd'Isere… Getting in the rhythm for that is a challenge!

I placed 6th in Sölden, my best season opener so far. And because of that I'm starting first time in the top7 group here in Beaver Creek! I'm really excited about that, always wanted to start with number 1. I hope I have luck in the bib draw. Sölden was almost solid, made some mistakes and those of course feel frustrating when it's a battle of hundredths. I've developed technically and physically this summer and autumn, and I'm also very happy with my equipment and setup. Gives me confidence and I'm looking forward to racing some more.
Today's a day off. Thought of going shopping but it's Thanksgiving and the shops are closed. Bad timing... Maybe I have to hit the shops at 12AM for Black Friday! We stay in apartments here in Vail, that gives us the chance of making our own food. Luckily we have MasterChef Pablo in our team. Will probably gain 10kg's this 2 weeks! Some speed for the flat in Sotchi...

I'm getting a bit restless here at home. We had a few good training days in Tux a week ago. Was supposed to fly back there for some more good days, but it's been snowing a lot in the Alps which means it's really soft. We had to delay our camp, move the travel day forward again and again. We have a press conference and photo shoots here in the end of the week, so flying down for just 1-2 days of skiing is not that smart. So we decided to concentrate on fysical training and growing that hunger for skiing, believe me it works. Luckily we had some really great days in Ushuaia!
So I've been spending quality time with my girlfriend, training, fishing, seeing friends and done some fun stuff before the season kicks off and I'll mostly be on the road. I'm looking forward to this season, it's a big one with the Olympics and all the fun GS world cups in the plan. Sölden, Beaver Creek, Alta Badia, Adelboden.. The list goes on. I'm getting excited. One and a half week to go!
It's snowing outside! I'm back on skis and that also means I'll start to blog more often again! My summer was relaxing. Had a lot of trainings, didn't have any major injuries so no long breaks and managed to do fun stuff in between. Summer is when I really get to relax and spend time with my girlfriend, family and friends. If you want to see some pictures check out my Marcus Sandell - Homepage on Facebook!

We had our first camp in Saas Fee in the beginning of August but due to rainy weather we only got 3 days there. So the season didn't get off to a real start until we came to Ushuaia! Here the weather has been a bit challenging, snowy and soft, but we had a little luck the first 5 days. After sliding and hard work by the coaches the surface was compact but the course got really bumpy. A shaky ride but now I'm getting the hang of it. Been training a few days with the Austrians, they're a bunch of hard-working guys so it's motivating! And it's fun to make a few bets on the runs... Might have won a beer already!

The World Cup season 12/13 is officially over! It was a difficult and at the same time exciting season with developing a challenging new GS ski, an operation and a few broken bones and some really tough races! But I kept a good feeling throughout the season, had an extremely great group of coaches and my man Ali and the Fischer team supporting me who helped me progress in my racing! I really enjoyed racing and training and I'm looking forward to next season already, but before that a well earned vacation and a sweaty summer full of fysical training.
Sölden of course was a big disappointment and it was difficult and painful to race with a broken hand and toe, but after that I was fairly consistent landing 4-7-9-9-12-12-15-16 results with some good skiing and some bad. I rose from a 19th place in the GS cup to an 8th place! Garmisch's 4th place was the season highlight for sure but I also value Kranjska Gora's 16th place very much. I was really sick that day and thought I wouldn't be able to race at all! I learned a lot this season; in which kind of mindset I should race, how tactical I should be, I got more confident and found a good rhythm between training/resting for my recovery problem. All in all I'm happy and hungry for more!
Now I'm spending a few days in Salzburg before some SG FIS races at the end of the week, and after those I have a short pit stop at home before I leave on a warm and sunny vacation with my lovely girlfriend. Been looking forward to that! :)
I felt like shit afterwards for the next days, now I'm starting to feel better and hopefully I'll get rid of this virus tomorrow so I have some days to get activated and ready before the GS finale on Saturday!

But it was worth it! :) I skied technically nice but the last power which is needed to fight for the higher places was missing. Normally a 16th place wouldn't make me smile but on that day and considering the condition I was in I can be satisfied with my performance! Tomorrow I'm driving to Lenzerheide. Congrats to Ted for the victory in this years GS cup!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Marcushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05357639129722778336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6716998676516388162.post-23823100242209552332013-02-28T15:01:00.000+02:002013-02-28T15:01:24.824+02:00MSI'm excited to have a personal logo and an own Halti MS hat!
